    Style Notes

Koinobori or 'carpstreamer', are carp-shaped mythical windsocks traditionally flown on 5th May, the last day of Golden Week, to celebrate Children's Day, a national holiday in Japan. They are made by drawing carp patterns on Japanese paper or organic cotton and are thought to have originated in the Edo period (1603-1868 CE).  The koi fish is known for its ability to swim upstream, representing courage and determination, in the hope that children will grow up healthily. Multiple Koinobori can be attached to a single pole.
