Asafo flags were first created by the Fante people in the coastal villages of Ghana in the 17th century. The designs, which often feature human figures and animals framed by graphic borders, depict Akan proverbs and were used for special ceremonies and rituals, also becoming a symbol of resistance. Where a British flag is depicted, the flag predates 1957, the year of Ghanaian independence.
Dyeing, embroidery and appliqué techniques are used to create these colourful textile patchworks. Each flag has lived a life, hung outside in all weathers and carried during parades. The effects of this can often be seen within the fabric, and only add to their character. Over time, Asafo flags have been embraced by exhibitions, museums and private collectors for both their historical and political storytelling and their aesthetic charm.
