This chawan (tea bowl) has been made by hand by Troy Town founder Aaron Angell. Troy Town is a workshop of Anglo-Japanese pottery using traditional Japanese techniques and glazes, based in Hackney, London. By purchasing this item, you are contributing to Troy Town's ongoing support for artist residences.
A chawan is a bowl used for the preparation and drinking of tea, traditionally as part of a Japanese tea ceremony.
A classical copper saturate glaze is used on the chawan, with pine needle ash reconstructed from 16th century compositions. It is fired in very light reduction over an inclusion body containing granular feldspar, then soaked in acid, then ash lye post-firing to reveal the unique rich green colour of this glaze breaking to white over texture.
